Humayun’s Tomb

Description

Humayun's tomb is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun situated in Delhi. The tomb was thought by Empress Bega Begum who was Humayun's first wife, in 1569-70. Mirak Mirza Ghiyas and his son, Sayyid Muhammad designed this splendid monument. She chose Persian architects. It was the first garden-tomb which was made in the Indian subcontinent and is located in Nizamuddin East, close to the Dina-Panah Citadel which is also known as Purana Quila(Old Fort), that Humayun founded in 1533. It became the first structure which used red sandstone at such a scale. In 1993 this wonderful tomb was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since then it has undergone extensive restoration work. Besides the main tomb, several smaller monuments line the pathway leading up to it, from the main entrance in the West.

History

This tomb is related to Humanyun who was one of the strongest and powerful emperors of his time. This tomb stores the vibes and the aura of that time which must be felt once in a lifetime. Apart from this, it has proven to be a perfect point for spending some quality time.

  • Opens On All Days. Timing: Sunrise to Sunset. (8:00 AM To 6:00 PM is supposed to be the best time to visit here). Entry Fee: Rs. 10 For Adult (citizens of India) and visitors of SAARC and BIMSTEC Countries, Children below 15 years, do not require any fee. Rs. 250 For Adult (foreign nationals), Children below 15 years, do not require any fee.

Attraction

  • Char Bagh which translates to “Four gardens” is a Persian-style garden with the quadrilateral layout and was the one of the first in the South Asia region in such a scale. The highly geometrical and enclosed Paradise garden is further divided into four squares by paved walkways and two bisecting central water channels which reflects the four rivers that flow in Jannat (Heaven), the Islamic concept of paradise. Tomb of Isa Khan: It was constructed in 1547 CE. The tomb complex is of Isa Khan Niyazi, an Afghan noble in Sher Shah Suri's court of the Suri dynasty. He fought against the Mughals. This octagonal monument is positioned within an octagonal garden. It was built during his lifetime. It later served as a burial place for the whole family of Isa Khan. Several other monuments which can be seen here are BU Halima's Tomb and garden, Afsarwala tomb and mosque, Nilagumbad, Chillah Nizamuddin Aulia, and Barber’s tomb.
